bellingham.jpg Dream Town Bellingham, WA has another honor bestowed upon our beautiful city with recently being rated the 4th most secure place to live in the country. According the annual Farmers Insurance Group study, Bellingham and Whatcom County area is the fourth most secure place to live among midsize U.S, cities and their metro areas combined.

The study is compiled for Farmer’s Insurance by Sperling’s Best Places out of Portland, Oregon.  In conducting the survey Sperling compiles statistics from the last several decades on crime, unemployment rates, extreme weather, environmental hazards and terrorist threats.  The statistics are compared across 125 metro areas with populations of 150,000-500,000.

Growing up in Tacoma, WA until I came to Bellingham in the late 70’s to attend Western Washington University and then spending all these years in Whatcom County I know the difference of feeling secure and not secure.  That truly is one of the perc’s with living in this great community of ours, having a sense of security.  We enjoy great neighborhoods in Bellingham, awesome outdoor activities and now the knowledge that we also rated high on a list of secure places to live.

“Little blips such as last month’s wild weather of wind storms, snow and rain would have only a slight impact on future studies, because the study looks at statistics over three decades”, says Bert Sperling, president of Sperling’s BestPlaces, the research firm in Portland.

You can visit Sperling’s company website at BestPlaces.net for more studies on subjects like healthiest cities, best and worst cities for dating, and Best cities for Seniors.  The Pacific Northwest has always rated high on most surveys when it comes quality of living for seniors and retiring.

The article noted that another Northwest town - Boise, Idaho area is the most secure large metropolitan area (population 500,000 or more). St. George, Utah was the most secure small town in the survey (population of less than 150,000).  Via Bellingham Herald
